The Government Accountability Office just announced the release of its Enterprise Architecture Management Maturity Framework Version 2.0 on August 5, 2010. According to Randolph C. Hite, Director, IT Architecture & Systems Issues at the US Government Accountability Office, this revision “builds on the prior version by introducing considerably more scope and content to accommodate the evolving and complex nature of EA and the practical realities of actual EA development and use. The framework is not intended to be a rigidly applied “one size fits all” checklist, but rather a flexible frame of reference to be applied in a manner that makes sense for each organization’s unique facts and circumstances when planning for and measuring EA program management maturity. Among other things, this latest version of the framework incorporates comments that we solicited from EA practitioners and related experts within all levels of government, academia, and the private sector.” (R. Hite)
The EAMMF Version 2.0 can be found at: http://www.gao.gov/Products/GAO-10-846G

The morning of the first day of the Second week of FEAC’s Federated EA Certification Program each of the student teams presents the draft models and plans for completing their practicums, a requirement that must be successfully completed, to pass the program. This is the fall semester 2011 and the projects are all over the current topics raging in the blogs and IT news periodicals. They include:

An Architecture for a Mail Order Proscription Drug Service for a large government health program. (Healthcare Provisioning)

Identifying an Architecture to help Architect Customer Solutions for a fast-growing Internet Service Provider Company (Ist Responder Communications)

An Architecture to deliver analysis and information to City law enforcement Personnel in the field. (Data and Applications Consolidation)

A Segment Architecture for business area around government-wide geospatial services provisioning for a part of a cabinet agency (Geospatial Data Management)

Architecting Data Center Consolidation across a large business function for a part of the government with an international mission. (Data Center Consolidation)

An architecture, using an existing government contract, to prototype a means for aligning the technology services vendor’s IT to its customers IT and documenting such efficiently and effectively. (Matching IT Capabilities – Services Provisioning)

Architecting a repeatable IT planning process for a School District wishing to fix its technology challenges. (Educational Leveraging of IT)

The relevancy and currency of these projects just hits you smack in the think tank. We at the FEAC Institute didn’t plan these topics. They came from the students enrolled in this certification class. They are learning the direct value of EA and the modeling approaches taught to solving and adding value to achieving these tasks or addressing issues.

If you just scan the current topics of the day or open most any CIO or IT magazine and there are these and/or very related topics that are receiving direct attention everyday. EA methods and capabilities are critical to support these initiatives and others like them, the relevant topics of now.

EA is very relevant to today’s issues and topics and FEAC ensures there will be qualified Certified E-Architects available and capable to step up to meet the challenges.
